Rex in Latin means king. Rex fur is one of the softest and more eco friendly fur types. They are highly sought for their uniform look , low weight , and the excellent texture. Perhaps the most modern fur type in the industry , carrying the less is more mentality.
Rex fur comes from a randomly mutated gene in a rabbit’s genome which is responsible for the fur growth. Regular rabbit fur has long guardhair and short underfur. In the Rex family the guardhair and underfur is even. This random mutation was documented in Europe somewhere around the 1910’s and was preserved for commercial reasons since thicker fur was a desired trait.
Rex fur coats have a low volume, modern and clean look. As most of the natural furs they can be dyed at any color. Their texture is extremely soft, and the insulation index is as high as any fur. Unlike common rabbit a rex fur jacket will not shed more than any other fur type, if not less due to the shorter hair. The skin part is elastic and durable and with proper care it should last you for several years.
Fur garments and blankets made of Rex can be made by full skins or sections. A full skin fur product is made by the dorsal area which has the thickest fur and is sewn with the skin-to-skin technique. Rectangular shaped skins of rex fur are sewn one next to the other. Rex fur garments made of sections or pieces have a non-uniform look. They are very popular in the fur blanket or throw making industry thanks to the lower cost. The only compromise that is made has to do with the looks, while the costumer reaps the benefits of texture and warmth at a fraction of the cost. At the same time the fact that the ‘waste” is utilized, makes the product sustainable and ecofriendly
The main argument that makes Rex rabbit one of the most eco friendly furs is that the meat of the animal is used at the food industry. A holistic approach to a natural resource where everything is respected and used to the maximum with a minimum waste mentality.
A popular use of the rex fur is the creation of chinchilla like coats, jackets, and accessories. The low hair volume and the velvety texture make it an excellent candidate. The artificial coloring techniques have evolved over the time and the final look is aesthetically pleasing. Beware though because there are several unfortunate incidents of sellers selling rex fur as chinchilla.
